LANA DEL REY’S DREAMY MET GALA HAIR: BEHIND THE SCENES

As is the case every year, the dress code for the 2024 Met Gala—the theme being “The Garden of Time”—was open to many different sartorial interpretations. But for singer Del Rey, her final red-carpet look ultimately came down to gothic romance. The star attended the event in Alexander McQueen, paying homage to the house’s autumn/winter 2006 'Widows of Culloden' show in a signature gown with a statement headpiece and delicate tulle veil.

Naturally, Del Rey’s glam also aligned with her choice of ensemble and personal interpretation of the evening’s theme. As her hairstylist, Authentic Beauty Concept global creative advocate Anna Cofone, tells Bazaar, “Creating this look felt like a dreamlike apparition of fragility and beauty, evoking the romantic gothic. Waist-length, deconstructed waves set within a beautiful headpiece of fawn-tiered tulle draped across embellished branches—ethereal, poetic, and timeless.”

According to Cofone, preparations for the singer’s hauntingly whimsical beauty look were in process for over a month. Along with the Alexander McQueen archival runway piece, Del Rey’s hairstyle was inspired by sketches drawn by house creative director Seán McGirr. “We knew we wanted the look to be simple and ethereal, and to encapsulate a ‘Sleeping Beauty’ theme,” Cofone says.

Del Rey’s branched headpiece would make an architectural statement, which is why Cofone and the star decided on textural waves at a length that felt equal parts extreme and timeless. The singer’s make-up look was created by celebrity artist Etienne Ortega using a combination of Charlotte Tilbury staples, along with products from his own line, Ortega.
